"The
Art of the Duo"
Brenda Bufalino,
tap specialist extraordinaire, literally kicks off the Festival this
year with vocalist Jay Clayton, as they improvise in the jazz,
blues and avant-garde idioms, their work together conjures soulful
images of power and tenderness.
Joining
them for this concert are saxophonist "Sweet" Sue Terry
and pianist Peggy Stern. Sharing a sense of history and humor,
their music is very organized, yet very free, with lots of room for
improvising. The evening will also celebrate the release of their new
CD, aptly titled: "The Art of the Duo: "Sweet" Sue
Terry & Peggy Stern.
These two
duos will mix and match with each other, trading partners, and
playing in different configurations; the evening is certain to be an
intriguing musical adventure! Peggy Stern says: "I have always
enjoyed the intimacy and conversational nature of this type of
musical exchange, and I am proud to be participating and curating
this type of music in such a hip venue." This concert kicks off
a winter series to happen on the first Saturday of each month at
BEAHIVE, a new performance space in the Chronogram Building at 314
Wall Street.
SATURDAY

5 PM:
Jazz Guitarists Sheryl Bailey and Vic Juris bring
together tradition and push boundaries from modern into the future.
Bailey and Juris are known for their work together with "Jazz
Guitars Meet Hendrix", which is a mainstay of the "downtown
scene" in NYC, and they are equally known for their respective
careers as leaders of their own projects. Sheryl's latest release,
"A New Promise" (MCG Jazz) is an homage to the late and
great guitar virtuoso Emily Remler. "A modernist burner with an
abundance of Pat Martino-style chops." - Bill Milkowski

6:15 PM:
Baritone Saxophonist Claire Daly has won the Downbeat Critic
Poll for "Rising Star" 7 years in a row. This makes
her a slow riser. She'll be bringing a quartet to the festival,
featuring Jake Melchior on drums, MaryAnn McSweeney on
bass and Steve Hudson on piano. They have been working
on a piece honoring Mary Joyce, a cousin of Daly's, who did a 1,000
mile dogsled trip from Juneau to Fairbanks in 1936. Cool off
with Daly's warm tone on bari sax. The CD Quartet will be
swinging hard!
7:45 PM: As
a recording artist, Dena Derose has 9 CDs as a leader to her
credit, all of which have received superior accolades. She is in
demand, her passion isstronger and more visible than ever, and she
consistently delights her ever-growing worldwide audiences. Alan
Bargebuhr of Cadence magazine succinctly summed up the reason why:
"simply, she is a stunningly talented
pianist/vocalist." Dena not only awes her audiences and
music critics with her facility on the piano and her vocal talent
but, as Richard Scheinin of the San Jose Mercury aptly put it,
"she exudes joy - what soul!" Dena will feature Matt
Wilson on drums.
9 PM: Closing
out the Festival this year, as every year, will be the get-up-and
dance band ESTRELLA SAMBA Y SALSA. Always a crowd favorite,
this year is especially exciting, featuring "Sweet"Sue
Terry on alto and soprano sax, Fred Jacobs on trumpet, Claire
Daly on bari horn, and introducing this year, Corey Boris, a
local phenom, on trombone. The back line will feature Lew Scott on
bass, Pete O'Brien on drums, Peggy Stern on piano.
Weather permitting, and it has for the last 6 years, we'll be dancing
in the street!
This
festival had a lot that made it special-- the spirit from which it
all blossomed, the fact that all of us share a lifetime and
commitment to this wonderful artform: jazz , the lack of any
pretension and or competition, the feeling of friendship and support
, the fact that it happened on Wall St , Kingston. Sumi

I
have had many people make mention of it to me: how thrilled they were
about the event, the location, the talent, the set up, the sound,...
and with hopes that it can materialize again next year!-- Betty
